Bespoke swimming holidays

Swimming from Tresco to Tean

In addition to our Karma luxury swim holidays we also offer bespoke trips. In 2016 we were approached by a swimmer keen to introduce her friends to Scilly and the amazing swimming opportunities. We decided on a week at the end of September (a quieter time on the islands but usually still with great weather) as we had accommodation available in our guesthouse Mincarlo and the possibility of hiring in the support boat from Isles of Scilly Boat Hire on Bryher.
The group consisted of six swimmers (the capacity of the boats is six plus myself, Nick, driving) and two non-swimming partners.

We sat down on their arrival day with navigation charts, tidal flow charts and the weather forecast and planned the week; four days swimming with two rest days. We figured out we could do swims on all of the inhabited islands plus Samson and the Eastern Isles with a mixture of crossings, coastal and bay swims.

Day One

Swimming past Hangman’s Island

Bryher to Tresco (1400m) – Coastal swim hugging the Bryher side of Tresco Channel, swimming round Hangman’s Island and across to Tresco by Cromwell’s Castle.

Lunch at the New Inn, Tresco.

Tresco to St. Martin’s (2200m + 500m) – Swimming from Old Grimsby, past Norwethal, across St. Helen’s Pool to land on Tean. Short walk over Tean then quick crossing over to St. Martin’s.

Day Two

Eastern Isles swim

Great Ganilly to St. Martin’s – Starting from the small rocky beach on the uninhabited island of Great Ganilly, escorted by a small group of seals the swimmers passed the Romano-British remains on Nornour before crossing to the long sandy Par Beach on St. Martin’s.

Swim with seals – a dip to swim with the seals at Menawethan followed by a snack stop on the gorgeous little beach on Little Arthur.

Day Three

Samson beach

Bryher to Samson – from the same start point as day one, the group swam south along the coast of Bryher before crossing over to Samson.

Picnic lunch on Samson.

Tresco to Samson – due to the tidal flow, rather than swimming on to Tresco we dropped the group over to Appletree Bay and they swam back to Samson.

Day Four

Ready to start at Bar Point

Beady Pool & Peraskin, St. Agnes – two short dips in sheltered bays at Wingletang Down on the south of St. Agnes.

Bar Point to Pelistry – seeking shelter from the fresh southerly wind the group swam from Bar Point on the north end of St. Mary’s. Hugging the coast towards Innisidgen some finished at Watermill Cove and hopped on the support boat with two continuing on to Pelistry.
