This is an ideal opportunity to recce the course, train for Swimrun events, run beautiful coastal trails and swim in crystal clear Atlantic water.

Alternatively just come and enjoy a few days swimming and trail running around parts of Scilly lots of people don’t visit.

(This is not an ÖtillÖ event or holiday. Adventure Scilly is not connected with or affiliated to ÖtillÖ.)

Not quite your thing? Get a bunch of mates together and we’ll organise a bespoke swimrun trip.

about Longstone Lodge

You’ll be staying at the brand new Longstone Lodge.

The Lodge sits in a fantastic location right in the middle of St. Mary’s. After a period of sitting empty the cafe was completely revamped and opened again in Spring 2017 under new ownership. The Lodge is currently being developed and will open early in 2018.

about the guides

Roland will lead the trip, drawing on extensive experience of endurance events in general and swimrun in particular.

Nick will provide main safety and logistical support, adding a breadth of local swimming and trail running knowledge.

Roland Kelly

Roland Kelly designs and leads adventures for people who love the outdoors, wild and beautiful countryside and challenging themselves physically and mentally.

Roland has been participating in endurance events and adventures since 2007. Some of the more notable events Roland has completed are:

  1. Endurancelife One Day Devon Coast to Coast in 2011
  2. The first Ironman Wales, Tenby in 2011
  3. Noseman (black t-shirt finish) 2012
  4. Celtman (blue t-shirt finish) 2012, 2013 & 2014 times finisher
  5. The Endurance Life XTri24 2012
  6. The Scotland One Day Coast to Coast in 2012
  7. Ultra Mallorca 2013
  8. Original Mountain Marathon 2013
  9. Speights Coast to Coast (‘Longest Day’) Multisports World Championship 2014
  10. ÖtillÖ World Championship 2014
  11. Strathpuffer 2017
  12. Regular winter or summer trips to the Scottish Highland to bag a few Munros.

In recent years Roland has designed and led his own challenges. These have included 100k trail marathons and multi day MTB events for groups of six. In 2015 Roland designed a led the Wales MTB C2C, followed by the England C2C in 2016 and the Scotland C2C in 2017. All of these were over four days and cover up to 400km.

In 2015 with assistance from local kayakers Roland designed and then completed a solo and self-supported swimrun around all the main islands in the Isles of Scilly.  Later that year following publication of this adventure and discussions with Michael and Mats the ÖTILLÖ Scilly Swimrun was created.

Nick Lishman

Swim teacher, run leader, mountain-bike instructor and beach lifeguard; Nick has decades of experience of the sea and islands of Scilly. A keen interest in nutrition and in the strengths of the body and mind in sport combine with a genuine passion for his home and the experiences to be found there.

Nick is joint founder of the Scilly Swim Challenge and advised Otillo leading up to the first swimrun event in 2016. He then took part in the event in 2017, turning down the chance to race with Roland which he now feels rather awkward about!

what will the water temperature be?

around 13-14°C

what equipment do I need? do I need a swimrun wetsuit?

Although it’s great to have specialist kit an ordinary triathlon wetsuit will do. We will give you a kit list before the trip but the basics are a wetsuit and some trainers.

Check out this article for an overview.

We recommend Zone3 wetsuits and Vivobarefoot trainers.

what level is this aimed at?

The trip should suit all except complete beginners and real experts – the aim is not to race the course but to experience it.
We will keep together as a group for safety.
You can view the OtillO route here which will give you an idea of the distances.

will we follow the OtillO route?

We aim to cover most of it but bear in mind that we may have to alter it due to weather. Also the route proposed by OtillO may change.

do I have to complete all of the sections?

No. If you want to miss out a run or a swim that’s fine. You can take a shortcut, catch a ferry back to St. Mary’s early or have a ride on the safety boat.

how do I get to Scilly?

You can find all of the information you need at
